ATHENS, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - For three days, members of the UCF men's tennis team battled their opponents, and the weather, at the Southern Intercollegiates on the Georgia campus. On Sunday, only one Knight was able to compete before the squad headed back to Orlando.
In the Division II singles round of 32, senior Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) picked up a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5) win over Magin Ortiga of Georgia Tech.
The tournament was filled with rain delays and postponements, forcing the Knights to leave early.
UCF players recorded some big wins at the event, including a quick 8-2 doubles victory for senior Marc Rocafort (Barcelona, Spain) and junior Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla.) over Jamal Adderly and Romain Deridder of USF in the Division I doubles round of 64 on Friday.
UCF assistant coach Nick Zieziula accompanied the Knights to Georgia. He says that despite the battles with the rain, UCF had a successful trip.
"It certainly was disappointing to not be able to play all of our matches and not finish the tournament," he said. "Our guys had some big wins against some good competition. Overall it was a good start to the fall season."
The team will return to action on Oct. 2, competing at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee.
