ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - This weekend, the UCF men's soccer team will play host to the UCF Fall Classic on Friday and Sunday at the UCF Soccer Complex. The Knights will be joined by UNF, Iona and Georgia Southern and each is set to play two games each in the event. Iona is matched up against Georgia Southern on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and UCF will follow against UNF at 8:30 p.m. On Sunday, Iona will play UNF at noon, with UCF closing out the Fall Classic against Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.
The Knights are coming off of a well-fought match against No. 11 USF on Tuesday, but unfortunately fell 2-1 to the Bulls. Freshman Jeffrey Simmons (Monroeville, Pa.) scored the lone goal for UCF, the first of his collegiate career.
Trailing 2-0 coming out of halftime, the Knights controlled the possession of the ball throughout the final 45 minutes. For the game, UCF held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks and a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal against the highly-ranked Bulls.
UCF's will have its home opener Friday against UNF. The Ospreys have not played a game this season and went 1-1-1 in the preseason. UCF has an overall record of 3-1-0 all-time against the Ospreys and defeated UNF 3-1 last season.
Prior to the UCF-UNF game, Iona will face Georgia Southern. Iona went 2-0-0 in preseason games, and defeated New Hampshire on Sept. 1 for a 1-0 start to the regular season. Georgia Southern also went 2-0-0 in preseason matches, and will be playing its first regular season game Friday.
All men's soccer games during the 2009 season are free of charge and will be played at the UCF Soccer Complex.
