ORLANDO, Fla. (www.UCFAthletics.com) - After playing No. 1 North Carolina and No.10 Duke this past weekend in the Carolina Nike Classic, and leading her team to an upset over the Blue Devils with a 3-2 victory, Courtney Whidden has been named the Bright House Student-Athlete of the Week at UCF.
Whidden, a senior at UCF, finished the weekend with two goals on six shots, five of which were on net. She came off the bench to play 31 minutes vs. the top-ranked Tar Heels and placed both her shots on goal in the 4-0 loss Aug. 28.
Against Duke two days later, Whidden helped UCF erase a 1-0 halftime deficit with her first goal of the year in the 48th minute, taking a pass from freshman Nicolette Radvocic, and finding the back of the net. Subsequently, in the 76th minute, she punched in a rebound off of a shot by Yvonne George to help the Knights take a 2-1 lead as they went on to the previously mentioned upset. It was the sixth time in Whidden's career she scored two goals in a match.
The UCF women's soccer team takes the field again on September 4 as they face LSU in Tampa at the USF tournament, followed by a game on September 6 against Florida International.
