ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Kevan George (Decatur, Ga.) did not show the need for much a learning curve as a freshman men's soccer player for UCF in 2008, leading the Knights in goals and earning a spot as the only freshman named to the All-Conference USA first team.
His abilities still seem to be fresh in the minds of coaches around the league as the current sophomore has been voted by the coaches as one of the 12 members of the C-USA Preseason All-Conference squad, the league office in Dallas announced Tuesday.
George and his teammates began preparations for the 2009 season on Saturday, and with a multitude of newcomers on the Knights' young roster, he will be counted on for both production and leadership as UCF begins play on Sept. 1 at 11th-ranked USF.
Despite being a freshman a season ago, George produced, scoring four goals from his midfield spot. Hise season included game-winners against Old Dominion and Memphis in the regular season and an assist in UCF's victory over Memphis in the C-USA Tournament quarterfinals. He also led the team with 10 points.
"Kevan did a great job for us last year as a freshman, both controlling the midfield and also scoring goals," said UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham. "He has had a tremendous offseason, and we look for him to continue to improve and help us compete this season."
UCF will have one more tune-up prior to the opener at USF, hosting Tampa on Sunday at 11 a.m. in an exhibition game at the UCF Soccer Complex. The Knights' regular season home opener will be on Friday, Sept. 4 when they host North Florida at 8:30 p.m.
