ORLANDO, Fla. - UCF defensive tackle Torrell Troup (Conyers, Ga.) was named on Tuesday to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Awarded by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, the prestigious Nagurski Trophy has honored the top defensive player in America since 1993. It is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, an All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.
Earlier today, Troup and fellow defensive lineman Bruce Miller (Canton, Ga.) were named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award. Troup was also named last week to the watch list for the Outland Trophy, annually awarded to the nation's top interior lineman by the FWAA.
A disruptive force at tackle who also eats double teams allowing his teammates to roam free and make big plays of their own, Troup started all 12 games for the Knights last fall and registered 52 total tackles (30 solo). He amassed 12.5 tackles for loss, tying for fourth overall in Conference USA. Troup added two sacks, two pass breakups and four quarterback hurries. He was a key part of a Knights defensive unit that led C-USA in rushing defense (126.08 ypg) and passing efficiency defense (107.46 rating) while ranking second in the league in both total defense (333.75 ypg) and scoring defense (24.08 ppg). UCF's defensive line proved to be particularly strong last fall, ranking third in the nation with 8.17 tackles for loss per game and 26th nationally in sacks.
