UCF Assistant Sam Shweisky Named Princeton Men's Volleyball Head Coach

Aug. 10, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF volleyball assistant coach Sam Shweisky has been named the new head coach of the Princeton University men's volleyball team, Princeton Director of Athletics Gary Walters announced Monday.

"I would like to thank Todd, Michelle, the UCF players, and the entire UCF athletics department for making the past two years such a memorable experience," Shweisky said. "I feel very honored to have been a part of the new Knight era. Coach Dagenais has created a great vision for UCF volleyball and I feel very fortunate to have worked with him these past two years. I wish the team continued success in the years to come and will always remember my time as a UCF Knight."

Shweisky spent the last two years as an assistant for the UCF volleyball program and helped guide the Black and Gold to its best finish in five years in 2008. Shweisky was in charge of UCF's volleyball summer camps, volleyball alumni relations and scouting the Knights' upcoming opponents.

"We are very proud of Sam for being able to achieve his goal of becoming a head men's volleyball coach," UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. "He joins a very small fraternity of men's Division I coaches across the country and he deserves to be in that elite company. This is a sure sign of the strength of the UCF volleyball program when an assistant can move on to be a head coach. We are proud of Sam and wish him the very best."

The newly appointed skipper will take over a Princeton men's squad that posted an 11-12 overall record last season and advanced to the EIVA quarterfinals.

Shweisky will follow in the footsteps of former head coach Glenn Nelson, who, in 58 seasons with the Tigers, became Princeton's all-time winningest coach. Nelson, who coached both the Tigers' men's and women's teams beginning in 1982, is the only man in NCAA history to guide both teams to the national tournament in the same season in 1997-98.

Besides his head coaching duties, Shweisky will also serve as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball program.

The Knights open their 2009 campaign when they host the Radisson-UCF Invitational at The Venue at UCF on Aug. 28.
