AUCKLAND, New Zealand (UCFAthletics.com) - Sophomore guard Isaac Sosa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) of the UCF men's basketball team totaled 18 points Wednesday to lead Puerto Rico to an 80-73 victory over Lithuania to open the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship. Puerto Rico will return to action Thursday, continuing group play with a game against Greece.
In 31 minutes, Sosa connected on 6-of-11 shots. He made 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range and also grabbed five boards. Sosa was one of four players on the Puerto Rico squad to score in double-figures.
After facing Greece, Puerto Rico will conclude Group A play versus Angola Friday. Bracket play begins Sunday. The 16-team tournament is set to conclude July 10.
Sosa, who averaged 8.2 points as a freshman in 2008-09 at UCF, is no stranger to international play. Last summer, he led Puerto Rico to a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina. He averaged 13.8 points and 3.2 boards at the event. Sosa had his best contest against Canada, totaling 19 points and six rebounds.
