ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - During his three years on the court at UCF, Adam Gill did the dirty work to help the Knights win. The center, who suited up for UCF from 2004-07, was happy to set screens, box out and fight for position in the paint.
This summer, Gill is lending his help to another group - the Wisconsin State Public Defender's Office. Gill just completed his first year of law school at Michigan State and is currently doing an externship in Rhinelander, which is in the northwestern part of Wisconsin. The public defender's office handles criminal defense cases for individuals who lack the money to hire a private attorney.
According to Gill, he is gaining great insight into the criminal justice field.
"I am the sole law school intern in the office, therefore I do a number of different things," he said. "My duties include doing legal research on certain issues that may arise in an upcoming case, reading trial testimony and interviewing clients. Occasionally I will shadow an attorney as they handle actual court cases in front of a judge."
A native of Springboro, Ohio, Gill had his best campaign with the Knights in 2005-06. He appeared in 29 contests, making 15 starts, and averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds.
Gill is still unsure of which legal field he will focus on while at Michigan State, which is another reason why he is enjoying externship in Wisconsin.
"I am planning on doing a different aspect of law, such as civil or corporate, next summer, and then decide which area I enjoy practicing the most," he said. "I definitely plan on becoming a lawyer, I am just unsure which state I will practice in and what area of law to concentrate on."
Season tickets for the 2009-10 campaign are currently available. The Knights are slated to open the year on Nov. 13, hosting UMass at the UCF Arena. Contact the UCF ticket sales office at (407) UCF-1000 or visit UCFAthletics.com to order your tickets today.
