ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF softball's senior first baseman Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) was honored with the Conference USA Spring Spirit of Service Award, C-USA commissioner's Britton Banowsky announced Wednesday. Javier was one of 12 student-athletes from the league to garner the honor for the spring season.
The Spirit of Service Award was designed by the league office to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The award is presented three times throughout the season, with the spring honorees representing the following sports: softball, baseball, equestrian, men's and women's golf, outdoor track & field, women's rowing and men's and women's tennis.
An All-Conference and NFCA All-Midwest Region selection, Javier has volunteered her time to at least nine different community service projects during the past two seasons. On numerous occasions she visited the Central Florida Children's Home and the Central Florida Miracle League, while also lending a helping hand at the Quest Camp Thunderbird. She has also shared her experiences at the College Color Days at Disney, telling younger student-athletes the importance of focusing on academics and athletics. The Castaic, Calif., native also read to underprivileged youth at the Salvation Army's Reading Days and volunteered at the Salvation Army October Festival, providing a safe Halloween alternative to central Florida's young people. The children that Javier mentored were invited to the UCF Softball Complex during the season to support her and the Knights.
Javier, who recently signed a free-agent deal with the USSSA Pride of the NPF, batted .318 with 57 hits, 10 doubles, two home runs and a team-best 34 RBI for the Knights in 2009. The first baseman also paced the Black and Gold in three defensive categories and helped her team turn a nation-best 32 double plays.
The first baseman finished her career ranked in the top-five at UCF in 15 career categories and in the top-10 in 24 single-season categories.
