ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF track and field team and head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert were awarded an ACCUSPLIT Relay Award last week for posting the nation's top collegiate time in 2009 in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay. The award was handed out at the ACCUSPLIT/Nike Coaches Party last week prior to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. This year marked the 27th consecutive year that ACCUSPLIT presented the relay awards.
ACCUSPLIT handed out relay awards for eight different events on the women's side, with UCF being one of just four schools to earn one of the prestigious honors. Texas A&M, the 2009 NCAA outdoor national champion, LSU and Tennessee also claimed at least one relay award this season.
The Knights posted the top time in the shuttle hurdle relays on April 24 at the 115th running of the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. The UCF shuttle hurdle team of freshman Jackie Coward (Knoxville, Tenn.), junior Tiki James (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Micaela Wimberly (Miami, Fla.) and Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) won the event in 54.07 seconds. The time also bested the previous school record in the shuttle hurdle by over one second.
UCF concluded its 2009 outdoor season over the weekend at the NCAA Championships. The Knights had a school-record five student-athletes qualify for and compete at nationals, including James and Harris.
