May 5, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team, which will open NCAA Regional play on May 14 in nearby Sorrento, has finished the regular season ranked 17th in the country. The Knights, who claimed the Conference USA Championship title in April, are listed in the top 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

During the 2008-09 campaign, head coach Nick Clinard's squad won three tournaments. The Knights recorded eight top-five finishes, including seven in a row.

UCF moved to as high as 14th nationally in March.

On Monday, the Knights learned that they will be playing close to home for the regionals. Along with the Central Florida Sports Commission, UCF is hosting a regional at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento. The C-USA Championship was also held at the course.

Freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.), who garnered C-USA Golfer and Freshman of the Year honors last week, concluded the regular season 39th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index individual ratings. Junior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland), the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, is 67th nationally. All-C-USA Second Team selection senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) is 84th.
