ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) feels lucky. The All-Conference USA Second Team selection will conclude his collegiate career by competing for the national title next week when the Knights participate in the NCAA Championship in Toledo, Ohio.
Johnson is a big reason why the Knights will be in action at the Inverness Club starting Tuesday. He has participated in all 12 of UCF's tournaments this season and has posted six top-20 finishes. In 2008-09, Johnson and his UCF teammates have claimed four tournament titles, highlighted by the crown at the NCAA Regional in nearby Sorrento, Fla., last weekend.
When asked about the impressive end to his college career, Johnson could not contain his excitement.
"It is a great feeling," he said. "This whole year has been a great team effort. From the coaching staff to the players, we all put something together and did a really great job. I can't wait to get up to Toledo. We are going to prepare ourselves to have a shot to win a national championship."
At the NCAA Regional, Johnson tied for 14th at 5-under 208. The appearance in the regional was the second of Johnson's career. In his first year at UCF after transferring from Brevard Community College, he helped the Knights earn a spot in the 2008 NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash.
Before the NCAA Regional in Sorrento, Johnson earned his undergraduate diploma. He is happy that he can remain a student-athlete for another week.
"It seems like I will be in college for a little bit longer I guess. It is a weird feeling without having school to go back to. But I am real excited about being able to play more golf for UCF. I guess I have one more chance, and that is really exciting."
