HATTIESBURG, Miss. (UCFAthletics.com) - Just a few days after receiving the UCF Male Scholar-Athlete Award, senior first baseman Kiko Vazquez was voted onto the Conference USA All-Academic Baseball Team which was announced Monday. It was the Sebring native's second time he received a spot on the prestigious squad, as he also was named to the team in 2007.
UCF has now had at least one student-athlete selected to the C-USA All-Academic Team in each of the last three seasons.
The only UCF player that has competed in all 55 games this year, Vazquez joined three other student-athletes as repeat selections to the academic team: Rice's Jimmy Comerota, Southern Miss' James Ewing and UAB's James Oliver. Vazquez posted a 3.43 grade-point average while majoring in sports and fitness education.
Holding a .304 batting average in his final season in a Black and White uniform, Vazquez has racked up 58 hits, 42 runs, 41 RBI, 14 doubles and 12 homers in 2009. He also has collected 23 walks and a school single-season record 21 hit by pitches. A career .305 hitter, he has evolved into arguably the Knights' best defensive first baseman of all-time, highlighted by a .996 fielding percentage with just two errors in 535 chances as a senior.
Vazquez and the Knights will be opening postseason play as the No. 8 seed for the C-USA Championship Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET against No. 1 East Carolina in Hattiesburg, Miss.
