SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team posted a 16-under 268 Thursday to race out to a lead after one day of play at the NCAA Regionals at the RedTail Golf Club. The 17th-ranked Knights are ahead of second-place Arizona (270, -14) by two shots.
UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) and redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) are both tied for third after recording 5-under 66s. Four Knights are among the top-15 individuals. Junior Devin Spies (Sarasota, Fla.) is tied for seventh (67, -4) and freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) is tied for 14th at 2-under 69.
The Knights are participating in the NCAA Regionals for the third-consecutive year. UCF junior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland) is tied for 24th after carding a 1-under 70.
South Carolina and Charlotte are tied for third at 11-under 273, followed by Florida State (277, -7).
Arizona was paced by individual leader Tarquin MacManus, who posted an 8-under 63. Charlotte's Corey Nagy is second at 6-under 65.
Play was delayed for nearly four hours in the afternoon due to lightning. Three UCF golfers were done with their rounds when the break occurred. The round began at 8:30 a.m., but did not end until 7:45 p.m.
Second round action will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday. UCF will tee off at 9:30 a.m.
UCF is hosting the regional along with the Central Florida Sports Commission. Admission is free for spectators.
The Knights claimed the Conference USA Championship at RedTail in April. Ward took medalist honors, and Barber finished second.
