DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Senior Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) and junior Ashleigh Cole (Pace, Fla.) paced the UCF softball team to a 3-0 win over in-state rival Bethune-Cookman Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park. Javier went 2-for-4 with two hits, including a double, two RBI and one run scored at the plate, while Cole fired a two-hit, complete-game shutout with two strikeouts in the circle.
The Knights improved to 23-24 on the season with the victory, while the Wildcats fell to 15-29 in the loss.
Cole picked up her 14th win and third shutout of 2009 for the Black and Gold on the mound, improving her record to 14-7.
Hillary Barrow (Miami, Fla.) also posted a hit and a RBI for the visiting team, with Abby McClain (Waterloo, Iowa), Vanessa Perez (San Diego, Calif.), Ashleigh Cole (Pace, Fla.) and Lindsay Dean (Jacksonville, Fla.) all posting one hit apiece.
UCF and Bethune-Cookman struggled to put runs on the board through the first four innings, before Javier broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with a RBI double to right centerfield, scoring Natalie Land (Mayo, Fla.), who reached earlier in the inning on a walk and stole second to put herself into scoring position. Barrow followed up with a single to left field to bring Javier around to score and put the Knights ahead by two runs heading into the bottom of the frame.
UCF plated a third run in the top of the seventh inning to seal the victory, thanks to Javier's second RBI of the contest. The senior hit a single through the right side of the infield to allow McClain to touch home from second base. McClain led off the frame with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Land.
The Knights conclude their seven-game road swing this weekend when they travel to Memphis for their final Conference USA road series. The three-game series begins Friday with a single game at 7 p.m. ET, before wrapping up with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
The UCF softball team will play its final C-USA series of 2009 against UTEP at the UCF Softball Complex on May 2-3.
