SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 19 UCF men's golf team stormed onto the course and took a five stroke lead at the Conference USA Championship at the RedTail Golf Club Sunday. Four Knights finished the opening round under par, led by freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.), who is tied for first at 4-under 68.

The Knights recorded a 9-under 279 team score. SMU (284, -4) sits in second place behind UCF after completion of day one.

The three-day event, which is being hosted by UCF and the Central Florida Sports Commission, continues Monday. Eleven C-USA teams are in action at the tournament. The Knights begin the second round at 9:15 a.m. Monday on the first tee.

Barber is tied for the lead with the UAB's Zack Sucher. UCF junior Simon Ward (County Monagahn, Ireland) registered a 3-under and is tied for third.

Senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) and redshirt freshman Brian Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) ended the first round in a 12th-place tie at 1-under 71.
