ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF track and field team will continue its outdoor season Saturday, competing in the Miami Elite Invitational in Coral Gable, Fla. The meet will start with field events beginning at noon while running events will get underway at 5 p.m. and run through the 4x400-meter relay at 9:30 p.m.
Through three events in the outdoor season, the Knights have had considerable success. In just three events this season, UCF has posted 17 NCAA regional qualifying marks and established school records in six different events.
The program has also claimed Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors twice during the outdoor season with sophomore Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) and junior Kelsey Poljansek (Milton, Kan.) earning the honor in back-to-back weeks.
Head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert has regional qualifying marks in two different events from Harris, freshman Sheila Paul (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.), Poljansek and senior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.).
Poljansek has set school records in both the shot put and the discus. Harris broke the previous record in the 400-meter hurdles and Paul has established a new mark in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Also, the 4x100-meter relay of junior Tiki James (Miami, Fla.), Harris, Thomas and Paul and the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay of James, Harris, freshman Jackie Coward (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Micaela Wimberly (Miami, Fla.) broke the old school records.
