Final Stats
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Playing in its second match in as many days, the UCF women's tennis team experienced a 6-1 defeat to North Texas Saturday at the UCF Tennis Complex. Freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) pulled through in the third set in singles, giving the Knights their only point for the match. The Knights fell to 8-7 on the season, while the Mean Green improved to 12-5.
On the doubles court, North Texas used aggressive play to win the first overall point. The Mean Green clinched doubles by winning the tiebreaker at No. 3, 7-0, after junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) and Core tied the match at eight games apiece. Sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenberg, Sweden) and senior Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain), currently ranked 27th in the nation, kept their composure in an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Madura Rangonathon and Amy Joubert. The duo improved their record to 9-2 on the season.
After dropping the doubles point, UCF was unable to comeback against the Mean Green as North Texas took five of the six matches. Core, the Conference USA Player of the Week, cruised by Narine Kazarova in the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-3, as her opponent fought back. The third set was tightly contested, but Core rallied to a 7-5 victory ensuring the Knights would earn at least one point on the day.
In the all-time series, the Mean Green's victory tied the register at one a piece. In the only previous meeting, UCF rolled to a 9-0 defeat during the 1999 campaign.
The Knights will travel to Tampa on Wednesday and battle in-state rival USF. Louisiana-Lafayette comes to town on March 27 to take on the Knights at the UCF Tennis Complex at 10 a.m.
