March 19, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Claiming an 8-5 record, the UCF women's tennis team closes out its four-game homestand this weekend starting against No. 12 Tennessee (9-2) on Friday at 2 p.m. The Knights also welcome North Texas (11-5) on Saturday to the UCF Tennis Complex with the first serve slated for 10 a.m. Admission to all Knights' home matches is free.

On the current homestand, the Knights are 1-1 with a victory over Penn State and loss to No. 12 Clemson. Against Penn State, UCF did not drop a set in its four singles victories after claiming the doubles point to post a 5-2 win. This week the Knights' No. 1 doubles team of Elvira Serrot and Jenny Frisell earned a No. 27 national ranking in the latest ITA Tennis Rankings.

Tennessee travels to Orlando after suffering a 5-2 defeat against No. 23 Florida on March 15 in Gainesville. Eleven of the 12 opponents that the Lady Vols have faced are ranked in the top 70. The Lady Vols have the No. 48 singles player Caitlin Whoriskey and the No. 32 doubles team with Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota who are 6-1 on the season.

North Texas holds an 11-5 record and secured a victory on March 18 against Stetson 5-2, before tangling with the Knights. With victories over Lamar, Middle Tennessee, Tulane, and UTEP, the Mean Green are 58-36 in singles on the season and 27-18 on the doubles court.

In the all-time register, UCF will be battling the Lady Vols for the first time on the tennis courts. The Knights hold a 1-0 advantage against the Mean Green with UCF cruising to a 9-0 win in 1999.

The Knights will travel to Tampa on Wednesday and battle in-state rival USF. Louisiana-Lafayette comes to town on March 27 to take on the Knights at the UCF Tennis Complex at 10 a.m.
