Core Honored as C-USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week

March 17, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After an amazing performance on the courts, freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) was selected as the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week the league announced on Tuesday. Core recorded a 3-0 singles and doubles record on the week including a match-clinching victory against Tulane.

For Core, it was her first weekly honor of her career. It was the second-consecutive week that a Knights player was selected as a player of the week. Last week, the doubles tandem of senior Elvira Serrot and sophomore Jenny Frisell was honored.

In New Orleans, La. on a spring break trip, Core opened the week with a solid victory against Southern on March 9, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1, win over Bethlehem Workeneh. Against conference foe Tulane on March 10, Core proved to be the difference in the match when she battled back after dropping the first set 7-5 against Caroline Gerber before putting her away 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 to clinch a 4-3 victory for the Knights. Junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) and Core provided the Knights with their only doubles win against the Green Wave, winning 8-4.

Core and the Knights returned home on March 14 to battle Penn State. Against the Nittany Lions, the duo of Core and Orletsky clinched their victory over Leyla Morzan and Marai Prishlyak in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7). Then at No. 5 singles, Core breezed by Maria Preishlyak, 6-4, 6-3, to begin singles play for the Knights, who went on to hand the Nittany Lions a 5-2 loss.

The Titusville native holds a 9-2 singles dual match record on the season and only dropped one set on the week. Meanwhile, Core and Orletsky improved their doubles record to 5-3 during the spring campaign.

UCF returns to the courts this weekend with matches against No. 15 Tennessee at 2 p.m. on Friday and North Texas Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches at the UCF Tennis Complex is free.
