NEW ORLEANS, La. (UCFAthletics.com) - In one of the Knights' closest matches of the season, the UCF women's tennis team used strong singles play to defeat host Tulane, 4-3, in New Orleans, La. Freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) used a three-set win to secure the victory for the Knights against the Green Wave. The Knights defeated the only conference opponent on their schedule and improved to 7-4 on the season, while the Green Wave fell to 8-8.

UCF took an early lead in doubles when Core and freshman Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) cruised by their opponents Jessica Lange and Marcela Fonseca, 8-3, at No. 3. The Green Wave continued to battle with the Knights by locking up the remaining two doubles matches with 9-7 wins to take an early 1-0 lead.

For the first time this season, the Knights lost the doubles point to an unranked opponent, but freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Columbia) recorded a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Lindsay Dvorak at No. 2 to start a rally against the Green Wave. Sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenberg, Sweeden) at No. 1 tied the match at two by breezing by Anna Bartenstein, 6-0, 6-3.

Then at No. 6, Orletsky used a 6-4, 6-1 win over Marcela Fonseca to provide the Knights with their first lead on the afternoon, 3-2. After falling in the first set, Core used an impressive comeback against Caroline Gerber, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot to clinch the victory for UCF.

The Knights head back to Orlando for their next match on Saturday against Penn State at the UCF Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission to all UCF home matches is free.
