Rompza Named to C-USA All-Freshman Team

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UCFAthletics.com) - Guard A.J. Rompza (Chicago, Ill.) of the UCF men's basketball team has earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Tuesday. Rompza ranks third in Conference USA and 36th nationally, averaging 5.1 assists.

Rompza has dished out 142 assists this year, good for seventh on the UCF single-season register. He is the first Knight to garner C-USA All-Freshman Team honors since UCF joined the league in 2005.

This season, Rompza has appeared in 28 contests, making 25 starts. The point guard has registered at least five assists 16 times and on three occasions, he has recorded at least 10 assists.

He dished out a career-high 11 assists in UCF's win over SMU on Jan. 28. Rompza averaged 5.0 assists in league play.

His 2.37 assist/turnover ratio ranks fifth in C-USA and 26th in the country. Rompza is also among the league leaders in steals (1.6-8th).

Tyreke Evans of Memphis, Paul McCoy of SMU, Darrius Morrow of East Carolina, Arnett Moultrie of UTEP and Damier Pitts of Marshall were also selected to the all-freshman team. Evans took freshman of the year honors.

Rompza and the Knights have earned the No. 6 seed at C-USA Championship and will face No. 11 Southern Miss in opening round Wednesday. Tip-off at the FedEx Forum is slated for 3:30 p.m. Eastern at the FedEx Forum. The contest will air on the UCF-ISP Sports Network and WYGM 740 AM in Orlando.
