UCF Fastbreak - March 1

March 1, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman guard A.J. Rompza (Chicago, Ill.) scored just two points at Marshall Saturday evening, but the diminutive rookie certainly made his presence felt. Rompza dished out a game-high nine assists against the Thundering Herd.

He found senior guard Jermaine Taylor (Tavares, Fla.) on the wing. Rompza hit senior center Kenrick Zondervan (Hoofddorp, Holland) in the post. On several occasions, he kicked it out to freshman guard Isaac Sosa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) behind the arc.

Rompza took good care of the basketball at Marshall. In 31 minutes, he committed just one turnover.

Despite missing two games, Rompza has recorded 132 assists in 26 contests this year. He is quickly approaching the top 10 on UCF's single-season assists register. Anthony Haynes currently occupies the 10th spot, having totaled 136 assists in 1989-90.

A year ago, Chip Cartwright paced the squad with 107 assists.

Rompza ranks third in Conference USA, averaging 5.1 assists per contest.

The Knights will return to action Wednesday at Tulsa. The squad's regular-season finale is set for Saturday against East Carolina at the UCF Arena.
