Boca Raton, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., Saturday afternoon. The Knights only dropped one set in singles matches after securing the doubles point en route to moving their 2009 record to 2-1.
"It was a good team effort to battle through some of our injuries," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "They were able to tough it out today and we are very pleased with our results. We are definitely looking forward to facing a very good Miami team tomorrow."
In the doubles competition vs. FAU (2-6), sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenburg, Sweden) and freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the No. 2 position took down Danielle Simone and Erika Mrazkova, 8-3. In the No. 3 slot, senior Kenza Belbacha (Casablanca, Morocco) and junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) defeated Cassie Bergeson and Emma Rossiter, 8-3, to ensure an early 1-0 lead for the Knights.
UCF then started singles with No. 70 freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) breezing by Wimmer, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 2 position improving her dual-match record to 2-1. Frisell and Rodriguez posted the same 6-2, 6-2, scores against Mrazkova and Rossiter at No. 3 and 4, respectively.
At No. 5, Belbacha notched a 6-4 win in the first set before finishing Simone off 6-2 in the second set. And in No. 6 singles, Orletsky posted a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Virginia Augustin giving the Knights the match, 6-1.
On Sunday, the Knights conclude their road trip against the No. 13 Hurricanes in Miami, Fla., at 10 a.m. before returning home to play Georgia Southern on Friday. All matches at the UCF Tennis Complex have free admission.
