UCF Athletics Holds Celebration for Female Athletes on Saturday

Feb. 6, 2009

Orlando, Fla. (www.UCFAthletics.com) - UCF Athletics celebrated the 23rd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by holding a clinic staffed by UCF female student-athletes, coaches and trainers on Saturday, February 7th at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex.

The festivities began at 4 p.m. and featured meet-and-greets with UCF female student-athletes, coaches and administrators as well as individual team interactive areas. The event culminated with the UCF women's basketball team knocking off SMU, 78-68, at the UCF Arena.

"Today's event was a great opportunity for our athletes to be good role models," said assistant volleyball coach Sam Shweisky. "It was a great chance for them to run some drills and teach different volleyball skills, and to also teach the kids to have fun and enjoy the sport. We had a great turnout, and we really appreciate the community showing up."

UCF volleyball players were a part of the clinic and showed some of the young girls who attended some basic volleyball drills such as hitting, serving and passing. Sophomore Kristin Fisher was one of the student-athletes who helped set up the drills.

"It was really fun to get young kids in here today and show them how to play and be able to show them what we do, and how we act as female athletes," said Fisher. "We just did some basic drills like passing, serving and hitting. They had a lot of fun and just had huge smiles on their faces, and it was a huge joy to us to be able to see that."

UCF's celebration was one of more than 1,000 taking place around the country to recognize National Girls and Women in Sport Day, with events taking place in all 50 U.S. states. Originally chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, the day was set aside to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to ensure equality for women's sports and encourage female participation in sports and fitness.
