Final Stats

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With a slight breeze in the air, the UCF women's tennis team used strong singles play to blank Eastern Michigan, 7-0, Thursday at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Knights recorded their third shutout on the season improving to 5-2 overall, while the Eagles dropped to 3-8.

"We came out a little flat in doubles, but then we got it going," said UCF head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "The girls did a great job in singles and I knew that the intensity was there. It is always great to get a shutout. This was a big win and it is important to have some confidence going into Monday because we are definitely going to have a battle. I expect to have a tough match against North Carolina State."

UCF swept the doubles point for the third time in as many matches taking an early 1-0 lead against the Eagles. Freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) teamed together to quickly defeat Miriam Westerink and Joanna Woo, 8-2, at the No. 3 position.

Sophomore Jenny Fisell (Gothenberg, Sweden) and senior Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) secured the doubles win at the No. 1 slot by edging Karina Ahuja and Xu Chang, 8-4. The sweep was completed when freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartenga, Columbia) and freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) put away Marcela Rivero and Rumbidzai Muskwe, 8-5, at No. 2 position.

After securing the doubles point, Core at No. 5 quickly defeated Rivero without surrendering a point, 6-0, 6-0 to begin singles play. Shortly there after, Orletsky notched a 6-1, 6-0, triumph over Muskwe at the No. 6 position. With a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Ahuja at No. 2, Frisell gave the Knights their fourth point on the day ensuring the victory over the Eagles.

Even though the match was in hand, Yacaman continued the Knights' strong play cruising past Chang, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3. Rodriguez pushed the lead for UCF to 6-0 posting a 6-4, 6-3 win against Woo. After Serrot at No. 1 was victorious in the first set 6-3, Westerlink fought back in the second set, but was unsuccessful as Serrot used a forehand winner to end the match, 7-5.

The Knights will continue their homestand against No. 75 North Carolina State on March 2 and No. 6 Duke on March 6. Admission to all home matches at the UCF Tennis Complex is free.
