Barber Earns C-USA Recognition; Knights Move to 19th Nationally

Feb. 25, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A day after the Knights claimed the title at the Rio Pinar Invitational, the UCF men's golf team moved to 19th in the Golfstat NCAA Head-to-Head Standings and freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) garnered Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors Wednesday. Barber took medalist honors at the three-round event at the Rio Pinar Country Club.

He finished the tournament at 12-under 204. Barber concluded the 21-team event by carding a 3-under 69 in the final round. After opening play with a 71 (-1), he registered an 8-under 54 in the second round. The 64 tied a school single-round record. The individual title was the first of Barber's collegiate career.

The C-USA honor for the freshman marked the second time in as many weeks that a UCF player was recognized by the league. Junior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland) won the award last week after tying for first at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville. This season, UCF players have earned the award on four occasions.

The Rio Pinar Invitational served as the Knights' second tournament of the spring. Head coach Nick Clinard's squad has recorded four top-five finishes this year.

UCF will return to action on March 29 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C.
