ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Abby McClain (Waterloo, Iowa) shined on the softball field this past week, earning the Bright House Student-Athlete of the Week at UCF. She helped her fellow Knights to a strong showing in the Comfort Suites Invitational over the weekend, as well as adding late inning heroics in Wednesday's night game at Jacksonville for a 4-1 record on the week.
The second-year starter posted a .474 (9-for-19) batting average with five doubles, a triple, six runs scored and four RBI. Of McClain's nine hits, six were for extra bases, which included the game winning RBI double in the eighth versus Jacksonville on Wednesday night. In that contest McClain went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and one run scored. During the UCF Comfort Suites Invitational, McClain totaled six hits, which included four doubles, scored five funs and had two RBI while accounting for seven of the Black and Gold's 16 total runs. McClain carried over her clutch performance from Wednesday night into the first game of the weekend against Portland St., where she hit 3-for-4 and produced the game-tying RBI.
While posting an .842 slugging percentage and 16 total bases, McClain's contribution was on both sides of the diamond, playing second base, center field and left field during the five-game stretch. She now leads the team with 18 hits on the season, and is second with a .360 batting average.
This will be another big week for the Knights who play host to seven games, including a doubleheader on Wednesday and the UCF Invitational over the weekend.
