UCF senior Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) shot a two-under-par 70 on Sunday to pace the field by two strokes, and lift the Knights as a team into a fifth-place tie, in the opening round of the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic, UCF's first tournament of the spring.
Connelly's 70 was the lone sub-par round of the afternoon in the enormous 43-team, 215-golfer field. Three other golfers shot an even-par 72. Nipping at Connelly's heels is freshman Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) who carded a 73 in her first collegiate round of action, giving the Knights two of the top five finishers on Sunday.
With this strong play from the top of the lineup, UCF totaled a 306 (+18) to tie for fifth place out of 43 schools playing at Kiawah Island, matching Western Carolina's tally. Miami (Fla.) and East Tennessee State shared the opening round lead with an even 300 (+12).
Senior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) was third for UCF, and tied for 103rd overall with her 81 (+9). She was followed by teammates Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) with an 82 and Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) with an 84.
Tournament play will continue with single rounds on both Monday and Tuesday.
