ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - This week, softball assistant coaches Stephanie Best and Jennifer Whitley will be featured on Tuesday's edition of UCF SportsKnight at noon on UCF TV and 3:30 p.m. on SunSports. The program also takes a look at the track and field season with head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert.
Each week, viewers are taken inside the past week in UCF athletics by graduate Jeff Sharon during the 30-minute program. Throughout the week, UCF TV, Bright House Sports Network and Fox Sports Atlantic air replays of the show.
On the SportsKnight Spotlight, Best and Whitley, two former UCF softball players, have made their way back to the team as assistant coaches. Last year, Best was a volunteer assistant coach with the Knights and also competed in the National Professional Fastpitch league since 2005. Whitley first joined UCF as a third baseman and catcher in 2003 and a student assistant coach in 2005. After her time with the Knights, she became an assistant coach with Tallahassee Community College and helped the Eagles earn a berth in the NJCA Division I Fast Pitch Championships.
The track and field team has one meet left on the indoor schedule, the Conference USA Indoor Championships. Coach Gilbert discusses her team's success in the indoor season with Sharon and looks ahead to the outdoor season, where UCF hosts three events starting March 21.
On Saturday night, the men's basketball team played a thrilling contest against Tulsa, where the Knights erased a 17 point deficit in the second half with Jermaine Taylor recording a game-high 35 points. Freshman A.J. Rompza hit a runner in the lane as time expired giving UCF a, 74-72, victory over the Golden Hurricane.
Sitting at second in the conference standings, the women's basketball team defeated Marshall on Feb. 13, 68-50 before falling to East Carolina in overtime, 86-83, on Feb. 15. The Knights will travel to UTEP on Thursday and Tulane on Sunday before heading home for the final two games of the season.
The plays of the week and highlights from both basketball and tennis teams will be shown on this week's episode. Further information on the Knights is provided to the viewers through the news and notes section, which includes upcoming events.
"Give It Up to Us" by The Shoreline is the featured track on this week's edition of the plays of the week. More information about the band can be found by visiting its website at MySpace.com/theshoreline. UCF Athletics, Real Rock and Axis Magazine are proud to support local area music.
Customers with Bright House digital cable can see the program air at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. on Thursday on Bright House Sports Network (channel 47). Multiple times throughout the week viewers can watch the show on UCF TV (channel 1 or channel 99 for subscribers with basic cable). Archived episodes of the program are available online via UCFAthletics.com and ucftv.ucf.edu.
