Women's Soccer Opens Spring Season with 3-0 Win over Victoria

Feb. 16, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's soccer team kicked off its spring campaign Feb. 14 with a 3-0 win over the University of Victoria (British Columbia). Junior Yvonne George racked up two goals while classmate Courtney Whidden also scored in the shutout win.

"It was fun for us to be out there," said head coach Amanda Cromwell. "The first 30 minutes were a little rusty since we had not played in such a long time. But I'm really proud of the girls that they were able to create opportunities in the second and third 30-minute periods. Our fitness level was outstanding and I was glad to see all the hard work pay off."

After playing to a 0-0 draw in the first 30 minute stanza, UCF got on the scoreboard and it would not relinquish the lead. Emily Maynard found George on a thru-ball, who went one-on-one with the keeper and beat her near post.

The final 30 minutes saw the Black and Gold hit the back of the net two more times. Christina Petrucco delivered a pass to Nikki Moore on the right side, who in turn found Whidden on a crossing attempt and she put it home for the 2-0 advantage. Closing out the scoring, Becca Thomas sent in a corner kick, where Brianna Schooley headed it towards the net. Although the netminder got a piece of it, George was there for the rebound and the final 3-0 margin.

Lynzee Lee played all 90 minutes in net for the Knights. Victoria's best scoring chance came in the first 30, but Lee was able to deflect the shot, sending it off the post.

The Knights return to the field at Stetson on Saturday for a 7v7 scrimmage.
