GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Led by a two-under-par showing by Simon Ward (County Monagahn, Ireland), the No. 24 UCF men's golf team stands in fifth place out of 14 competing schools following the first two rounds of competition at the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
As a team, UCF fired a 566 (+6) over Saturday's opening two rounds of play. No. 15 Florida is presently in first place on its home course with a 545 (-15). The tournament includes 10 squads ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
Ward paced the Knights by firing a 68 and a 70 to tie for seventh overall at 138 (-2). Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) was second for UCF and 24th overall with a 142 (+2). Jed Dirksen (Hampton, Iowa) carded a 143 (+3) to tie for 30th overall, Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) was 42nd overall with his 145 (+5) while David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) rounded out the Knights finishers on Saturday with a 146 (+6). Competing as an individual, Mike Stern (Miami, Fla.) matched Johnson's 146.
Play at the three-round event at the Mark Bostick Golf Course will conclude Sunday.
