Feb. 13, 2009

Final Stats

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With perfect weather conditions in the Orlando area, the UCF women's tennis team toppled Georgia Southern, 7-0, Friday at the UCF Tennis Complex. It was the second shutout of the season for the Knights as they stretched their record to 3-2.

"We had a good week of practice and made some changes after last weekend," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "We're taking some things in a different direction, including changing our doubles lineup completely today. So it was a good match to go out and do that. And overall we've had a good start to the season. We've had some really tough matches and some pretty easy matches, so it was nice to get a win like this at home."

All three doubles combinations were switched up Friday vs. Georgia Southern (3-3), and they all stepped up in a big way. After playing with freshman Andrea Yacaman for her first 16 matches dating back to last fall, senior Elvira Serrot teamed up with sophomore Jenny Frisell en route to an 8-1 win over Kristi Kegerreis and Molly Maddox at No. 1.

Yacaman, meanwhile, joined senior Kenza Belbacha to post an 8-0 blanking of Melanie Rolle and Christine Caforio at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Katie Orletsky and freshman Christy Core had little trouble getting by Shea Huxtable and Jessica Fuller, 8-2.

With the doubles point in hand, the Black and Gold pounced on the Eagles in singles, notching wins in all six positions for the team shutout. Yacaman and Orletsky were quick to close out their matches, giving up only two games at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively. Belbacha also cruised by dropping just three games in her contest at No. 5, as did Core who defeated Fuller at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.

Already with a 5-0 overall advantage, freshman Alexis Rodriguez erased a one-set deficit vs. Rolle at No. 3, storming back for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-7) triumph. And even though Kegerreis pushed Serrot to the limit in the second set at No. 1, the UCF senior went ahead 6-1 in the tiebreak before using a crosscourt forehand winner to seal the match, 6-4, 7-6(4).

The Knights will now take Saturday off before hosting Florida Gulf Coast Sunday at 1 p.m.
