Jan. 6, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A very successful fall season helped UCF women's tennis player Andrea Yacaman receive some national attention Tuesday. The freshman from Cartagena, Colombia, was one of just 125 student-athletes who were ranked in the Jan. 6 ITA singles poll as Yacaman moved all of the way up to No. 70 in the country.

Yacaman was one of two Conference USA players who placed in the top 70, joining Marshall senior Kellie Schmitt who came in at the No. 33 spot. Meanwhile, of all of the freshmen at the Division I level, Yacaman ranked 15th in the nation.

In just her first semester of collegiate competition, Yacaman led the Knights with nine singles victories last fall, including winning her first six matches of her career. Named C-USA's Player of the Month on Oct. 14, she earned the Gator Fall Classic Flight B singles title, defeating two players from both Kentucky and USF. Yacaman also collected wins at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invite, the ITA Southern Regionals and the Miami Fall Invite.

Over in doubles, Yacaman teamed with senior Elvira Serrot for a 5-5 record, highlighted by the C.L. Varner Memorial Flight A tournament title.

Yacaman and the Knights kick off the spring season with the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament Jan. 16-18. UCF's dual-match campaign gets underway at home against Florida A&M Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.
