ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Gevenia "Ne" Carter, who signed an NLI in November to play college basketball at UCF beginning in the fall of 2009, is playing well in her final season of high school basketball at Westfield High School in Houston, Texas.
Carter has led her Mustangs' squad to a 23-4 record this season, including 14-straight victories overall. She is averaging 18.1 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 6.7 steals per game and has knocked down 43 three-pointers.
In back-to-back games earlier this month, Carter posted consecutive triple-doubles. On Jan. 6, she scored 21 points to go along with 11 assists and 11 steals in a 64-41 win over Tomball High School. Three days later, the 5-foot-8 guard posted 22 points and tallied 10 assists and 14 steals in Westfield's 74-35 win over Spring High School.
Carter is the 61st ranked player in the Class of 2009 according to the ESPNU HoopGurlz Top 100. The first top 100 recruit for the UCF women's basketball program, Carter is the lone early commitment in the top 100 of the class to sign with a Conference USA institution.
She is the 12th-ranked guard nationally and the top ranked guard in the state of Texas. She is the sixth-ranked player overall from Texas, a state with three of the top five recruits in the country. Carter drew interest from numerous top-notch programs, including Texas A&M, Kansas, Kansas State, Houston and Rice.
Carter has five regular-season games remaining in her senior season, beginning tonight with a contest at Dekaney High School, before she will look to lead Westfield on a successful run through the state tournament.
DOUBLE VISION
With a pair of double-doubles last week, UCF sophomore Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) brought her total for the season to nine and 21 for her career. Her nine double-doubles this season rank third in Conference USA.
ON THE GLASS
Cannon's strong rebounding during conference games, where she is averaging 11.3 boards per contest, has vaulted her to 15th nationally in rebounds per game. Cannon's average of 10.4 boards per game this season is also third in the league. The sophomore is undoubtedly the best offensive rebounder in the league, with 29 more rebounds on that end of the floor than any other player in C-USA.
HOME SWEET HOME
UCF returns home for a four-game homestand beginning Thursday against East Carolina. The homestand is the longest of the season for head coach Joi Williams' team. The Knights have played just 7 of their 19 games thus far at UCF Arena, but six of the team's last 10 games are on its home court. UCF is 2-0 at home in conference action.
SHOOTOUT
Thursday's game against East Carolina will pit the league's top two scoring teams during conference play. East Carolina has averaged a league-leading 73.8 points per game in C-USA games, and UCF is second at 71.7 points in those games.
10K GOLD RUSH
UCF will host Marshall on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the 10K Gold Rush. A free 10K Gold Rush t-shirt will be given to the first 500 fans in attendance while all fans are encouraged to wear gold in support of the Knights. In an effort to break the attendance record, UCF will offer all fans general admission tickets for just one dollar.
Prior to the 10K Gold Rush game, UCF (6-13, 4-2 C-USA) hosts East Carolina (12-7, 3-3 C-USA) Thursday night at 7 p.m. at UCF Arena. The two teams last met on Feb. 17, 2008, with the Pirates defeating the visiting nights 78-69 in Greenville, N.C. UCF Sophomore D'Nay Daniels (Atlanta, Ga.) led all scorers in the game with 20 points.
