GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After UCF opened the season with a victory over Florida A&M Jan.22, No. 7 Florida defeated the Knights, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in Gainesville. The Black and Gold (1-1) continues its road trip against in-state opponents when the Knights face Florida Atlantic Feb. 7 and Miami Feb. 8.
Florida (1-0) was able to sweep the three doubles matches to jump out to the 1-0 overall lead. UF's Megan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra, who are No. 18 in the country, earned the first win by defeating senior Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) and freshman Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) at No. 1, 8-0, and Jessica Alexander and Anastasia Revzina secured the early 1-0 lead by defeating sophomore Jenny Frisell (Gothenburg, Sweden)and freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 2, 8-1. The Gators completed doubles when Barbara Pineterova and Joanna Mather edged junior Katie Orletsky (Titusville, Fla.) and senior Kenza Belbacha (Casablanca, Morocco) at No. 3, 8-5.
UF continued its momentum from doubles, where at the No. 1 position, No. 34 Boonstra recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Serrot. In a matchup of ranked players, No. 78 Megan Alexander defeated No. 70 Yacaman, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3. Mather gave the Gators a commanding 4-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Rodriguez at the fourth spot in the lineup.
Jessica Alexander won against freshman Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.), 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot. In the sixth position, Pinterova secured the first set 6-1, and she held off a Belbacha rally, 7-5, in the second set.
The Knights continued to fight as Frisell stole the second set, 6-4, against Revzina at No. 2. But Revzina fought back and eventually posted a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(10-1) win, clinching a 7-0 victory against UCF.
