ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Collecting a 7-0 victory over Florida A&M to open the dual-match season on Jan. 22, the UCF women's tennis team gets right back to work on Saturday. The Knights travel to Gainesville to face No. 7 Florida at 2 p.m., which will kick start a three-match road swing, their longest of the season.
UCF blanked the Rattlers by using impressive play in both singles and doubles. The Knights gave up just five games in three doubles contests to sweep the first point, then failed to surrender a set in singles action. The win enabled the Black and Gold to move to 14-0 all-time vs. FAMU.
With a straight-set victory on Thursday, freshman Andrea Yacaman reached double-digits in singles, moving to 10-5 on the year. Meanwhile, classmate Christy Core inched closer to that mark as she now has a 9-7 singles record.
For the Gators, they competed in the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas last weekend, as Saturday's clash with UCF will be their first dual-match of 2009. Marrit Boonstra has climbed to No. 34 in the nation in singles, and Megan Alexander also is in the top 80 at No. 78. Meanwhile, the duo ranks No. 18 in doubles.
This will be the second time UCF head coach Stephanie Nickitas will face her alma mater. Last year UF defeated UCF, 7-0, in the 2008 season-opener to take a 6-0 lead in the all-time series. While with the Gators from 1996-99, Nickitas helped her squad claim the 1996 and 1998 NCAA titles while also serving as the NCAA doubles champion in both 1996 and 1997.
