Women's Tennis Opens Dual-Match Season at Home Thursday

Jan. 21, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A total of 20 dual matches are on the slate for the UCF women's tennis team this spring, and it all begins Thursday. The Knights are scheduled to host Florida A&M at 2 p.m., and admission to the UCF Tennis Complex is free.

The Black and Gold recently took part in the Florida Gulf Coast/Johan Kriek Tennis Classic last weekend, playing a hidden-dual format against teams like No. 37 Illinois, No. 43 USF, Missouri, Stetson and Akron. After the event was over, sophomore Jenny Frisell earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team by going 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles play.

Heading into the spring season, freshman Andrea Yacaman leads the way with nine singles victories, followed by classmate Christy Core who has eight. Yacaman, meanwhile, has partnered with senior Elvira Serrot 12 times this year for a 7-5 record.

UCF was victorious in last year's home opener, defeating Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0. The Knights went on to post a 12-9 record in head coach Stephanie Nickitas' first year.

For Florida A&M, this will be its first match of the season as well. The Rattlers went 4-10 in 2008, and will be returning three letterwinners from last year's squad.

The Knights and Rattlers have clashed on the tennis courts every season since 2002, and UCF currently owns a 13-0 all-time record in the series.
