ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The first event of the spring campaign for the UCF women's tennis team begins on Saturday, when it travels to Ft. Myers for the Florida Gulf Coast/Johan Kriek Tennis Classic. The tournament will be played in hidden-dual format, and will not count against the Knights' overall record as it will help prepare them for the rest of the spring.
Six teams will join UCF on the courts including No. 37 Illinois, No. 43 USF, Missouri, Akron, Stetson and host FGCU. The Knights will play singles against Illinois, Missouri, Akron and USF and doubles against every teams in the tournament.
The FGCU/Johan Kriek Classic begins on Friday with singles and doubles matches, but the Knights' first action is scheduled for Saturday morning. UCF faces the Fighting Illini in singles at 11 a.m., the Hatters in doubles at noon and the Bulls in doubles at 4 p.m.
After an impressive fall season as a freshman, Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Columbia) was ranked No. 70 in the Jan. 6 ITA singles poll. She knocked off her first ranked opponent in the Knights' final event of the fall at the Miami Fall Invitational.
The Knights will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 22, when they host Florida A&M at 2 p.m. in the dual-match opener. All home tennis matches are located at the UCF Tennis Complex and are free to the public.
