UCF to Open Indoor Track and Field Season Friday

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF track and field team opens its 2009 indoor season Friday afternoon in Lexington, Ky., against an elite field at the Kentucky Invitational. The meet takes place on both Friday and Saturday, with Friday's action commencing at 5 p.m.

The events on Friday include the weight throw, pole vault and triple jump while a full slate of events Saturday will include the high jump, long jump and shot put as well as the full array of running events. Live statistics will be available after each event at www.UKathletics.com/track.

The impressive field of competitors includes eight squads from the SEC. Marshall will be the only other Conference USA squad to compete. Participating teams in the women's field are: Auburn, Eastern Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and UCF.

During the 2009 indoor season, UCF broke 12 school records. Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) also became the first UCF athlete in school history to win a C-USA Indoor Individual Event Championship and earn NCAA Indoor All-American honors. With a school-record four all-conference indoor honors, UCF finished eighth at the C-USA indoor meet a season ago.

Also at the meet, Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned all-conference honors in both the triple jump and long jump while Micaela Wimberly (Miami, Fla.) was an all-conference performer in the 60-meter hurdles.
