ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - First-year head coach Terry Rooney has not only sparked excitement on the baseball field at UCF, he has also helped the Knights earn high marks in the classroom. For the 2008 fall semester, the UCF baseball team recorded a 3.2 grade-point average, the highest combined GPA in program history.
"I am extremely proud of the collective effort of our players academically this past semester," said Rooney. "We are continuing to emphasize a culture of excellence, both on and off the field. I would also like to commend our academic advisor, Jennifer Alger, for her outstanding work with our team."
Alger is in entering her sixth year at UCF, and is currently the lead advisor for baseball, men's basketball and volleyball. She is a liaison with UCF Orientation Services as well as the tutor coordinator for Academic Services for Student-Athletes. Alger earned her MBA and master's degree in sports business management from the DeVos Sports Business Management Program at UCF.
"I congratulate the entire team for accomplishing one of their major goals," said Alger. "They worked extremely hard and checked up on each other throughout the semester. They put in a lot of work and a lot of effort to achieve a 3.2. And the newcomers adjusted well to the high level of academics that we expect of them."
The Knights begin their spring semester on Wednesday, while they also will be preparing for Opening Day as UCF is scheduled to host Virginia Commonwealth on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
