ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Several cellular phone companies owe a big thanks to UCF's sports marketing and promotions office. In order to get the word out about the Knights' 7 p.m. contest Saturday with cross-state foe USF at the UCF Arena, UCF's marketing staff enlisted the help of hundreds of students - and their cell phones.
As part of the inaugural Text 10 promotion, students received Knightmare headbands after sending text messages to 10 friends about Saturday's game. On Wednesday, UCF marketing representatives manned a kiosk in front of the Student Union to promote the contest.
Flyers, posters and schedule cards were also distributed from the kiosk. Assistant director of marketing and promotions Jimmy Skiles estimates that between 5,000 and 6,000 text messages were sent from students informing friends about the UCF-USF showdown.
"Our student marketing team did a great job promoting the game. We hope to continue this throughout the season so students should keep their eyes open for the Text 10 promotion all season long Wednesdays in front of the Student Union," he said. The game against the Bulls will serve as UCF's second home contest of the season. USF will be playing in Orlando for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.
The first 2,000 students to enter the UCF Arena Saturday will receive free Knightmare t-shirts. Last season, Skiles was instrumental in providing a name for UCF's student section.
Season tickets, which begin at just $99, are still available. To order your season tickets today, and to learn more about the Fastbreak Club and other premium seating options, call the UCF ticket sales office at (407) UCF-1000.

Notes: Junior forward Tony Davis (Sarasota, Fla.) blocked a school record eight shots last year when the Knights played at USF. Entering Saturday's game, Davis needs just one swat to join the top-10 career blocks list at UCF. Davis has totaled 54 blocks during his time at UCF... The game against the Bulls will begin a two-game homestand for the Knights.
