Wiley Named C-USA Player of the Week

Dec. 22, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's basketball player Chelsie Wiley (Riviera Beach, Fla.) has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. The weekly honor is the first not only for Wiley, but also the first of its nature for UCF's women's basketball since joining C-USA in 2005-06.

"I am very proud of Chelsie's efforts and this is a well deserved honor," said head coach Joi Williams. "She has been working hard and been consistent in practice, and it has shown in her play in recent games."

For the week, which consisted of four games for the Knights, Wiley averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals while knocking down 14-of-20 attempts from three-point range.

She capped the week with a career-high 31 points against Ole Miss, including knocking down 8-of-9 three-pointers against the Rebels. With her record performance in the game against Ole Miss, Wiley became the first UCF player to score 30-plus points since Marvelous Washington tallied 31 against Belmont on Feb. 2, 2002.

Wiley's eight threes made tied school record, set twice previously by UCF's Francine Houston in 2002. The 8-for-9 outing broke Houston's previous mark (8-10) for three-point percentage.

With the outburst, the sophomore raised her scoring average to 11.1 points per game. Having knocked 17 of her last 28 threes, Wiley is now shooting 51.5 percent from long range, good for second in Conference USA.

The Ole Miss game was not Wiley's only strong performance of the week. The redshirt sophomore also knocked down the game-winning shot Monday at Jacksonville and scored a then career-high 20 points against Miami on Thursday.

Wiley and the Knights return to action on Dec. 31, concluding non-conference play with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., to play Florida State at 2 p.m.
