MIAMI, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshmen Andrea Yacaman (Cartagena, Colombia) and Christy Core (Charlotte, N.C.) both earned singles victories for the UCF women's tennis team in the third and final day of the Miami Fall Invitational Sunday. Core and classmate Alexis Rodriguez (Boca Raton, Fla.) also picked up a doubles win in the final event of the fall for the Knights.
"We ended the fall season on a really high note and the ladies did a great job all around this weekend of competing hard and showing a lot of toughness," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "That's what we expect and what we want from this team. They've been working very hard all fall and it's important for them to continue that into the offseason. Even though we don't have as many hours to work together now, they need to stay focused on their fitness so they are ready for the spring."
On Sunday, Yacaman had the task of going up against the No. 53 player in the nation in Florida State's Lauren Macfarlane. After taking the first set, 6-4, Yacaman secured her first career triumph over a ranked player by claiming the second set, 6-3. Meanwhile, Core posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory when she got past FSU's Bonny Davidson in singles play.
Over in doubles, Core and Rodriguez went toe to toe with Florida International's Maria Spenceley and Priscilla Castillo and were able to snatch the victory in a tiebreaker, 9-8(3).
Core finished the tournament with a 2-1 record in both singles and doubles play to post a team-high four wins. Rodriguez and Yacaman also collected two singles victories for the Knights on the weekend.
With the 2008 fall campaign in the past, UCF will now prepare for 2009 when it participates in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament Jan. 16-18. The dual-match season kicks off at home against Florida A&M Jan. 22.
