Meet the Knights: Sophomore Angelica Mealing

Nov. 3, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team is working furiously to get set for the 2008-09 season. As the season opener at Colorado approaches on Nov. 16, each of the 14 players on the Knights' roster this season will be introduced to the fans each weekday on UCFAthletics.com. The series will run from Oct. 22 until Nov. 7.

A quick, athletic point guard, Angelica Mealing was one of the numerous Knights who benefitted from extensive playing time as a freshman. The Decatur, Ga., native played in all but one of UCF's games, including seven starts.

"I really think I have grown a lot from last year, and the mindset is totally different," Mealing said. "I think I improved my strength and also got quicker."

Mealing averaged 21.3 minutes a game in 2007-08 and posted numbers of 5.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest. She also knocked down 19 threes and led the team in three-point percentage. Mealing enjoys her role as a point guard, especially having the ball in her hands.

"My favorite part is that the ball is in my hands ninety percent of the time and as a point guard everything goes through you," she said. "My role is to just keep everyone in control and focused on the floor,"

Head coach Joi Williams likes the versatility that the 5-7 Mealing brings to the position.

"Jelly has very good court vision and can push the tempo of the game," Williams said. "She is also a point guard that provides us with a scoring threat."

Fans will get their first chance to see the UCF women's basketball team in action this Saturday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. when the Knights host DT3 for an exhibition game prior to the UCF-Southern Miss Homecoming football game. Admission to the women's basketball exhibition is free.

Mealing and the Knights open the regular season at Colorado on Nov. 16. The home opener on Friday, Nov. 21, hosting Florida A&M at 7 p.m. at UCF Arena.
