ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team is working furiously to get set for the 2008-09 season. As the season opener at Colorado approaches on Nov. 16, each of the 14 players on the Knights' roster this season will be introduced to the fans each weekday on UCFAthletics.com. The series will run from Oct. 22 until Nov. 7.
After sitting out the 2007-08 season after transferring from Georgia State, UCF junior transfer Marcquitta Head (Conley, Ga.) gets the opportunity to get back on the floor this year.
"Words can't describe how excited I am after having to sit out a whole season," said Head. "It was really hard. It was depressing at times because there was only so much I could do from the bench. I could only give advice, but I couldn't physically help them."
The 6-4 center is expected to do much more than give advice this season. Head is looking to make an impact, and if her production at Georgia State is any indication, she will do just that.
In her two seasons, she averaged 9.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She owns the Colonial Athletic Association and school record for blocked shots in a game. She also holds the GSU record for blocks in a season.
Despite her success as a shot blocker, Head said she like rebounding even more.
"I take a lot of pride in rebounding because that will get us fastbreak opportunities," she said.
After transferring, Head was able to practice last season but could not play in games. She said she learned a lot about the team and also thinks they are much improved since the end of last year.
"I learned that the team worked harder than I expected," said Head. "They were really excited about the season and fought really hard. We have gotten fast, stronger and more confident. The chemistry is also much improved from last year so I have a lot of confidence in us."
After opening the season at Colorado, the Knights will play their home opener on Friday, Nov. 21, hosting Florida A&M at 7 p.m. at the new UCF Arena.
