ATHENS, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - After the doubles brackets were contested on Friday, the UCF women's tennis team opened singles play Saturday on day two of the ITA Southern Regionals in Athens, Ga. Freshman Andrea Yacaman won her first-round match, as three Knights had the task of going up against players ranked in the top 70 in the country.
Facing both a regional and Conference USA opponent, Yacaman came back from a set down to defeat UAB's Giorgia Romeo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to reach round two. However, No. 67 Marrit Boonstra of Florida topped Yacaman in the next match, 6-0, 6-2.
Senior Elvira Serrot and sophomore Jenny Frisell also battled top-70 foes in singles action but could not pull off the upsets.
Originally on the docket for Sunday, Frisell and sophomore Isa Ohlinger played their Flight B doubles semifinal contest against Miami's Alessa Waibel and Jenna Osborne Saturday, only to come up short in an 8-5 defeat.
Day three of the four-day tournament gets underway Sunday morning.
