Women's Golf Tied For Ninth After First Round

Oct. 24, 2008

AUBURN, Ala. - Senior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) shot an even-par 72 on Friday to place the UCF women's golf team in opening round action at the Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. Overall, UCF shot a 310 (+22) to tie for ninth place with Florida State and South Carolina. The Golfweek national rankings hold amazingly true with that tie as the three schools are ranked consecutively in the nation (FSU 33, USC 34 and UCF 35). No. 8 Virginia was the first round leader with a 289.

Tomimbang's stellar round tied for sixth-place overall after the first round and was six strokes better than any of her teammates. Tomimbang and Arizona State's Azahara Munoz are each three shots off of the lead. Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) and Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) each shot a 78 (+6) for UCF. Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) fired an 82 (+10) while Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the Knight golfers on Friday with her 85 (+13).

Action continues at Auburn with a second 18-hole round on Saturday.
