Oct. 23, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Back on the courts for its third fall tournament of the season, the UCF women's tennis team travels to Athens, Ga., for the 2008 ITA Southern Championships hosted by Georgia this weekend. The event begins Friday with the first two rounds of singles play in both Flights A and B, and will conclude Monday with championships matches in doubles and singles.

UCF will join 20 other schools at the tournament: Alabama, UAB, Auburn, Florida, Florida A&M, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, Mississippi State, Samford, South Florida, Stetson and Troy.

The South Region Championships features the Flight A singles and doubles winners, along with the singles finalist, advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November at the University of Virginia.

The Knights are coming off an impressive performance at the Rollins C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational Oct. 24-27, where they captured three of the four main titles. Freshmen Christy Core and Alexis Rodriguez met in the Flight B final with Core taking first place, while senior Elvira Serrot and freshman Andrea Yacaman earned the Flight A doubles crown and Core and senior Kenza Belbacha brought home the B doubles title.

Combined with a singles championship at the Florida Gator Fall Classic Sept. 19-21, Yacaman's efforts helped her pick up Conference USA Player of the Month honors. She currently owns a 6-1 record on the singles courts and a 4-2 mark in doubles play.

Draws for the ITA Southern Championships will be made available at www.georgiadogs.com Thursday evening.
