ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Members of UCF's track and field, women's tennis, softball and baseball teams all took part in a very special event on Oct. 18, volunteering their time for the Knights Give Back project. Student-athletes spent time in preparing Camp Thunderbird in Apopka to make it safe for the arrival of over 130 disabled children on Oct. 19.
"This was a great activity for our student-athletes to be involved in," said women's tennis head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "It was nice to take time out of our day to give back to the community and help people who may not be as fortunate. I'm so proud that our teams could be a part of that on Saturday."
UCF athletics partnered with the volunteering department at the University and as a school, UCF sent over 1,000 students to 20 different locations across the region. In conjunction with Quest, an Orlando-based organization that helps inspire central Floridians to achieve their full capabilities, the Knights traveled to Camp Thunderbird to allow children to have a true camp-like experience. They helped prep the 19-acre outdoor facility by cleaning up trails, raking the grounds and beautifying the fire pit and "5 Senses" area.
Quest Inc., was formed after Life Concepts and the Central Florida Sheltered Workshop merged in 1994. The CFSW was founded in 1962 by a group of parents to ensure vocational opportunities for their disabled children once formal education from the public school system was complete. Meanwhile, Life Concepts was founded in 1980, and provided residential services and specialized programs to children and adults with developmental disabilities who had formally resided in state institutions.
